Europa Universalis, Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron... one word - Paradox

Post by Crimson on December 16th 2012, 1:56 pm

Is anyone here into GS (grand strategy) games? More specifically Paradox ones like the ones mentioned in the title?

This may sound kinda random coming from me, but well, I've been into the whole thing for quite a while (as in a few years). Really been hooked on these games for a few years now - started off with Europa 2 many years ago, then learned of Crusader Kings. Then there was Europa 3 and now there's Crusader Kings 2. And look at that, Europa 4 will be coming out sooner or later :3

So I've been wondering who else is here into them? Or at least into other strategy games?

ME ME ME !!!

I absolutely love every GS from Paradox, well maybe except Hearts of Iron cuz I absolutely suck at that one.

I can't even count the hours spent playing EU3 and Vicky 2, I also have CK 2 but it kinda dissapointed me, not saying it is bad game, but I thought I would enjoy this dynasty gameplay more.

Anyways right now I can't wait for EU 4 and March of the Eagles, did you see the stream Crimson ? Some 2 guys from Paradox were playing one campaign as Prussia, it looked so awesome.

Bro, I know of you Very Happy

And yeah, got a similiar thing with HoI - there's kinda way too much for me to grasp in it properly so ended up not getting that hooked onto it.

I actually like CK2 - it's different from Eu in gameplay and I kinda liked the dynasty building system as well as the whole fighting with vassals for power etc. Kinda felt like a feudal lord of a rebellious state actually while playing it. I started with CK1 and since I liked it, CK2 I only liked more.

To be honest haven't every played Vicky, lol. And about Eu, did you play more on mods or on the vanilla one? I obviously started with vanilla, then went to mods and then started modding the game myself a bit. Was really fun Very Happy

And I haven't seen the stream youre talking about Sad Mind giving me a link or something? Smile

Whole stream is saved here : http://www.twitch.tv/paradoxinteractive/b/347754047
and just highlights are here : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C7EY69W-IeI

About EU, same here I started with Vanilla, then some expansions, mods later, and I modded a little bit for myself too. Did pretty much same with Vicky, except I didn't mod myself that much.

I like the system in CK 2, it's just that, it kinda annoys me with some details, like that weird naming system for your empire if you are Muslim, etc. But it's still great game. Also have you tried all the expansions of CK2?

CK 2 is a bit dissappointing cause half of the DLC(Sword of islam, legacy of rome) should have been in the game when it got released, but instead we have to pay 10 bucks for each.
I still played it for more than 300 hours,it's a good game but in some parts(like military) it isn't deep enough ya know.
Also like EU3 and Vicky 2.

Yeah the military part is really bad, even though I realize its not the main aspect of the game, it could be much better.

Agreed, the military sucks pretty much. I preferred the whole diplomacy and intrigue part, it was a lot cooler.

Oh and I haven't bought any DLC for CK2 - when I looked at what they offer and considered the price, meh, I felt as if they were trying to rob me;p

And in CK2 I was sometimes annoyed by the lack of historicity. I mean I know that for gameplay reasons they're making some thing be one way and not the other but e.g. the kingdom provinces of the Kingdom of Poland (like the eastern, Lithuanian land, which obviously were not polish during the middle ages) were funny. And the Kingdom of Pomerania? Lol.

You can only form kingdom of Pomeriana as a pagan,I think they put Pomeriana in game so that pagans have some kind of diversity, but since paganas aren't playable even after 10 patches and 3 majoy dlcs it's kinda useless.

Agreed, these dlcs are not even such big major change, I mean, why should I pay for being able to play ruler of different religion? Because these expansions change pretty much nothing.

I would understand if, let's say they would make Zoroastrianism,Pagans, and other minor religions playable, but of course, in one DLC, and not 5 small ones.

So I looked this stuff up, and I want to play it, since I like RTS and Total War. Which game should I start with if I never played any of those?

EU3 or CK2 since both of them are definitely the easiest in the whole genre

Yeah, I would recommend EU 3, get Europa Universalis 3 : Chronicles , since this version contains all the previous expansions.

And start as some easy country. (France,Austria,Bohemia..)

Yeah, the way they are releasing the DLCs is really pissing me off - not many innovations and quite some cash wasted (when you compare it with what they offer). But meh, they're trying to earn more cash through steam.

I recall the good old days, when Europa was more of a niche game, with it not being that well know (when Paradox wasn't that big of a game studio)...

Oh and I recommend Eu3:chronicles with all the additional content and as Domin said, start off with something like France, Austria, Spain, Turkey... something big, stable and with lots of prospects for expansion.

Post by Crimson on December 19th 2012, 11:49 pm

Oh, Christmas sales.
Well, CK2 and Europa aren't like your typical strategy game - it's not an rts were you directly control units, batalions and build structures etc. You do everything from a more macroscopic point of view (like you administer provinces, whole regions, countries, trade, diplomacy, colonization and military, tho it's in a way limited).

CK2 itself is mostly about diplomacy - you're a feudal lord, trying to expand your dynasty and land (i.e. have your kids marry other ppl, inherit new lands, get claims to new lands and wage war for them, have spies and do intrigue, assasinations etc. The character system is pretty cool, as in your character has certain traits which trigger certain events that influence your surroundings.). Things like feudal laws, reglion, relations with other ppl etc are kinda important.

Anyways, its a cool game in my opinion, but then again, I'm a paradox fan and I like most of their games.

New trailer for EU IV !

@ Crimson

Hmm, in EU 3, prolly Bohemia,Teutons,Poland,Byzantium,Persia and Serbia oh and Russia

I love going for some unifications/forming states , ex. Muscowy > Russia and conquer all Russian clay from Mongols and Tatars

In Victoria II , I liked probably Germany,Italy and Czechoslovakia most

In EU3 nations like Sweden,Castille,Naples etc since they are a bit bigger than avrage nations but still aren't baby mode as some(excluding Castille).
Vicky 2 on the other hand I like to play as secundary powers;Bavaria,Belgium,Denmark and Piemount, because they have 2-4 regions which is much easier to micro than for example France or Germany, and for CK2 anyone usualy a count in a land that's not HRE or Byzantium empire, much easier to climb in ranks.

Aww, Vzz, don't be such a hater:P Hungary ain't that bad xD

Anyways, I liked to play, at first, as Poland (lol) and other countries of the region (Bohemia, Hungary, Lithuania, Russia/Muscovy). After that I started playing as colonial countries (like Portugal, Spain, England etc). Also I really like Sweden. And some the exotic ones, like China (was moderately more interesting than Japan, though with Divine Winds Japan gets better) and Mughal Empire.
